Ivan Maxwell Jones is a fine art painter of landscapes, semi-abstract landscapes and abstracts.
He lives in Malvern, Worcestershire, a short walk away from the Malvern Hills area of outstanding natural beauty.Â
Ivan grew up in Norwich, Norfolk, and comes from a background in art and drama with grandfathers who were both painters. After graduating with a Drama degree from Bristol University, Ivan worked as a video editor, making mainly natural history programmes for BBC, before returning to art via stained glass making. Ivan then trained at the Bristol School of Art before teacher training. Having worked as a secondary school art teacher in Worcestershire for ten years, Ivan now divides his time between painting and tutoring, holding popular classes and workshops in Worcestershire.
Ivan’s landscape paintings often convey a heightened realism, abstracted through colour, form and texture. Ivan works mainly in acrylics, sometimes oil paints or oil on acrylic. The work expresses energy, movement and drama through a vigorous painting process: by building up layers of paint using brushes, palette knives, spattering, rubbing back, scratching and scraping away, Ivan creates textural surfaces with depth and history.Â
'Walking the Malverns'
The painting “Walking the Malverns’, acrylic on canvas, shows one of Ivan’s favourite and most frequently walked parts of the Malvern Hills. It shows the view from the south side of the Worcestershire Beacon, looking south towards the Wyche Cutting and the hills beyond including British camp in the distance. This is late summer, with the gorse in bloom and the rich colours enhanced by the early evening light.’
